Renowned Assamese journalist and founding editor of the popular magazine Bismoi, Shashi Phukan, passed away on October 26, 2024, at the age of 78. His death occurred at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati after a prolonged battle with health issues.

Phukan had been hospitalized for two months, following a series of health complications that began with a fall at his home, resulting in a head injury. He was initially treated at Hayat Hospital before being transferred to GMCH on the advice of Assam’s Chief Minister. Tragically, his condition worsened after suffering two strokes on the evening of his passing, leading to his death around 10:30 PM.
As the founder of Bismoi, which debuted in 1968, Phukan played a pivotal role in shaping Assamese literature and entertainment journalism. The magazine became a cherished platform for both emerging and established writers, featuring works by notable authors such as Baidurjya Baruah and Ranju Hazarika. Under Phukan’s leadership, Bismoi fostered a vibrant community of literary expression that resonated with readers across Assam and beyond.
